make a Potty for your Hammy

How Potty trained?

it's a very simple thing to do although hamsters will poo anywhere they usually choose one corner to pee in. Just find out which corner this is, make (or buy) a potty for them and put the sawdust that they had been peeing on into the new potty.

Why Potty?

Hamsters tanks/cages need to be cleaned often or the start to smell and it isn't healthy for them to be in a dirty environment; they could get wet tail. So I really think having them potty trained is great. That way you change the potty daily and the rest of your sawdust is safe for a few days.

Make Potty?

I live in a very small town so I couldn't just buy a hamster potty *shock* *horror*, because hamsters aren't a common pet here; in fact I was amazed when I saw a Teddy bear hamster in the only pet shop (which really only sells fish and birds). So anyway I had to make do with a jar, but my little Dusty would perch himself so precariously on the lip of the jar and sometimes even pee down the side! it's just because it's a round jar in the corner of the tank. What it really needs is something that he can put his feet on.

What you need

  •  jar
  • a cup of soup box
  • scissors
  • sellotape

here is my jar upside down on the soup box. I've already cut the back off the soup box.

draw a circle around the lip of the jar

cut away unnecessary box space (but not the sides) so that you can make the platform fit the jar.... but this is not necessary just nice.

In order to cut the circle I had to cut through the middle of the box, and when I cut off the excess space (without cutting the sides) I just taped over the cut and then, cut off the tape that didn't have a purpose.
Just fold the sides
And Tape!!!
Now your Hammy has a potty and somewhere to put his hind paws.
I decorated mine with beach rocks (cleaned and varnished) and sawdust on the outside. I used a heat and waterproof glue and let it dry outside Dusty's tank. Then I put some sawdust inside and some soiled sawdust.

For all you hamster Lovers!

My Hammy

I've never been a blog fan, but since I've got my long haired teddy bear hamster (Dusty at 6weeks left) I've found myself reading them a lot more than usually and I wish share some of my discoveries (obviously I'll use links or tell you what to google, since i don't want to take others credit) and creations for my hamster with you. I'm going to share some of his endearing qualities and the frights he's put me through as well as tips my crafty mind has been inspired to share. I just have to fingure out how to post these blog things :P

This is my Naughty Cat, and I hope that no one can hate her as even I can't. I mean a cat who drinks from the toilet? Dusty is the second hamster of my adult life, and his predicessor Luna was a winter white and eaten by this cat. I was distressed by the tradgy but I couldn't be surprised, as the lid of her aquarim tank had broken. Its very hot here in South africa and the lid I had replaced it with hadn't been sufficiant protection from my cat. My cat had simply pushed the lid off! Can you believe it. Dusty's new lid is a butlers tray, upside down and with holes in and has already proved sturdy. I'm going to be redoing his tank though since it is hot and he doesn't like bar cages. I need to make it more homely anyway since my boyfriend has the nicer (although smaller) of Dusties pads.

In my next blog I'll show you how to make a comfortable potty for your hammy, and maybe some other things. Just depends on how much I get done.
