How Potty trained?
it's a very simple thing to do although hamsters will poo anywhere they usually choose one corner to pee in. Just find out which corner this is, make (or buy) a potty for them and put the sawdust that they had been peeing on into the new potty.
Why Potty?
Hamsters tanks/cages need to be cleaned often or the start to smell and it isn't healthy for them to be in a dirty environment; they could get wet tail. So I really think having them potty trained is great. That way you change the potty daily and the rest of your sawdust is safe for a few days.
Make Potty?
I live in a very small town so I couldn't just buy a hamster potty *shock* *horror*, because hamsters aren't a common pet here; in fact I was amazed when I saw a Teddy bear hamster in the only pet shop (which really only sells fish and birds). So anyway I had to make do with a jar, but my little Dusty would perch himself so precariously on the lip of the jar and sometimes even pee down the side! it's just because it's a round jar in the corner of the tank. What it really needs is something that he can put his feet on.
What you need

a cup of soup box
scissors
sellotape

here is my jar upside down on the soup box. I've already cut the back off the soup box. |
